About Portage Knife
Portage began with a machine designer’s idea for a better way to manufacture circular scoring knives. A practical approach to engineering and a focus on the customer have shaped the company ever since.
Our Story
Founder Paul “Barney” Grimes developed specialized machines to make the 3-inch circular knife manufacturing process less labor intensive. His attention to machine design and part quality helped build Portage’s foundation.
At age 72, Paul “Barney” Grimes founded Portage Knife Company, bringing a lifetime of machine design and entrepreneurship to circular scoring knife manufacturing.
Paul retired and sold the company to his daughter, Jeannine Lizak; his protégé and plant manager, Chris Michalec; and his grandson, Duane Huff.
Portage began a program of technological investment to refine the manufacture of circular knives and accessories.
The company moved from Mogadore, Ohio, to a 28,000-square-foot facility in Akron, creating more room for manufacturing and improved efficiency.
Jeannine Lizak entered retirement, and Chris Michalec assumed the presidency and management of daily operations.
